A pot of murky wine completes what joy remains
送别
长亭外,古道边,芳草碧连天。
晚风拂柳笛声残,夕阳山外山。
天之涯,地之角,知交半零落;
一壶浊酒尽余欢,今宵别梦寒。
Farewell
Outside the postal pavilion, beside an ancient road, the grass is green up to the sky.
An evening breeze caresses the willows, a flute song falters, and the setting sun stands atop a mountain beyond.
To the reaches of heaven and corners of earth, half my friends are scattered;
A pot of murky wine completes what joy remains, and tonight I dream of chilling goodbyes.
postal pavilion: postal stations throughout China, similar to the US’s early pony express
The words are by Li Shutong (1880-1942), a late Qing buddhist monk who studied oil painting and music in Japan. The tune is adapted from “Dreaming of Home and Mother,” composed by John P. Ordway in 1868.
